Doug Young, Advisor

Mr. Young obtained his B.A. from the University of Toronto and his M.A. in politics and economics from Oxford University and his MBA from the Harvard Business School. Upon graduation from Harvard Mr. Young was a Wall Street investment banker with Lehman Brothers in New York. After moving to Phoenix in 1981, he became President of Sunbelt Holdings, Inc., an international investment company (controlling $200 million of assets in 1985) known for real estate and corporate investments.

Mr. Young also served as the Review Advisor (Financial Advisor) for The Industrial Development Authority of the County of Maricopa (the “Maricopa IDA”) and in that capacity assisted in the financing of such notable projects as the America West Arena and the Mayo Clinic Hospital. Over the twelve years (1990-2001) he served in that role, he participated in over $2 billion of debt financing. He was responsible for the due diligence on a wide variety of projects including apartment buildings, wastewater treatment plants, and nursing homes. At the time, the Maricopa IDA provided low cost mortgages to first-time buyers. In that capacity, Mr. Young did the annual speech on the state of the Maricopa County housing market at the annual housing conference.

With his own consulting company, he has been an expert witness in several valuation cases, and has acted as consultant for Motorola on a large real estate-related case and as expert witness for Price Waterhouse in the United Bank/Standard Chartered case. As a consultant he has also restructured loans and turned around companies with real estate assets and leases (e.g. restaurants). A large developer also hired Mr. Young to evaluate a complex real estate portfolio as a possible investment opportunity. He has also evaluated other real estate-related investments for investors including restaurants, a savings & loan, Rawhide etc.

He was appointed adjunct assistant professor to New York University and taught a graduate class in New York on destination strategy in the summer of 1997. Additionally, he was a member of the Urban Land Institute, Lamda Alpha, and the American Society of Real Estate Counselors (CRE). He was appointed by the Governor of Arizona to the Resolution Trust Corporation Local Advisory Board during the real estate downturn of the late 1980s. He is currently a member of the Advisory Council of Communities Southwest.

Mr. Young has been President of the Arizona Harvard Business School Club and of Arizona Business Leadership (“ABL”). He is a board member of the Phoenix Committee on Foreign Relations and is a trustee, member of the Executive Committee and Chairman-Elect of the Arizona Science Center. He has also served on the advisory boards of Universal Technical Institute, numerous corporate boards, and the boards of the Phoenix Symphony, the Harvard Business School Alumni, the RTC Local Advisory Board, Arizona Business Leadership, the Arizona Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association and other community organizations.
