Andy Conlin, Advisor
Andrew Conlin is a Professor of Real Estate Practice at the W.P. Carey School of Business, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ where he teaches real estate development to advanced MBA candidates who are concentrating in real estate finance.
He has been in the real estate development and urban planning business for over thirty years and has acted as development manager for over 2.8 million square feet of office, retail, specialty retail, mixed-use and urban entertainment mixed-use developments in Arizona, Oregon, Illinois, Washington and California.
Mr. Conlin holds a Master of City and Regional Planning (concentration in Real Estate Development) degree from Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts and before Harvard, studied at the Boston Architectural Center, Boston, Massachusetts. His undergraduate degree is in Urban Studies from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri.
Prior to entering the real estate arena, Andrew served as a professional staff member for the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, Washington, DC where he drafted and negotiated legislation relating to the fiscal health of state and local governments, including general revenue sharing and mortgage revenue bonds. He then began his real estate planning career as a city planner for the City of Newton, Massachusetts and later as a city downtown development consultant for the City of Lowell, Massachusetts and the City of Sparks, Nevada.
He spent 12 years as a development executive for The Rouse Company, Columbia, Maryland (now General Growth Properties). Andrew then took his extensive Rouse experience onward to serve as: Senior Vice President for DDR OliverMcMillan, San Diego, California; Vice President/Development for MadisonMarquette Development Corporation, Los Angeles, California; and, Managing Director (Development Executive) of Mesirow Financial Real Estate, Inc., Chicago, Illinois.
Andrew Conlin has offered development management and advisory services to clients of his Conlin & Company for prospective projects, as well as work-out, asset management, repositioning and disposition services for existing commercial properties. Among other assignments, he served as consultant on the architectural and site selection process for the Bank One Ballpark for the Arizona Diamondbacks and advised the Arizona Cardinals on the proposed retail, restaurant and office development aspects of Rio Salado Crossing (a 650-acre project including a multi-purpose convention center/stadium with associated hotel, golf, housing, office and retail facilities) in Mesa, Arizona. He also managed the feasibility assessment for the proposed 297-room Jacksonian Hotel in downtown Phoenix, as well as managed the pre-construction phase for the commercial elements of the Scottsdale Waterfront project, which includes 110,000 SF of specialty retail and restaurant space, 100,000 SF of office condominiums, and 350 subterranean parking spaces. He has developed retail shop and restaurant space in Tucson, Arizona and consulted on office condominium developments in Phoenix.
He has received numerous career and professional awards: Arizona Design Institute and Arizona State University’s School of Design, “Professional Recognition Award”; National Association of Office and Industrial Parks (NAIOP), “Developer of the Year”, “Best Mixed-Use Project” and “Best Landscape and Hardscape” for Arizona Center; Valley Forward Association, Environmental Award for “Best Mixed-Use Project” for Arizona Center; Downtown Phoenix Partnership, DREAMR award (Downtown Revitalization Effort Awards of Merit and Recognition) designated Mr. Conlin as the “Unsung Hero” of downtown Phoenix, recognizing the broad scope of his downtown development projects and his contributions to cultural and civic advancement there.
Andrew has been a member of the Urban Land Institute, National Association of Industrial and Office Parks, and International Council of Shopping Centers. He also is a current board member and Past President of Phoenix Chapter of Lambda Alpha International, the Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land Economics.
His community activities in Phoenix have included: Executive committee and founding board member, Downtown Phoenix Partnership; executive committee member, Phoenix Community Alliance and Arizona Science Center; committee and/or board member, Men’s Arts Council of the Phoenix Art Museum, Fiesta Bowl Committee, Central Phoenix Committee, Percent for the Arts Legislative Committee, City of Phoenix Community Development Block Grant Steering and Design Review Guidelines Committees, and Dos Puertas Homeowners’ Association. Currently, Mr. Conlin is Board Vice-Chairman of the Herberger Theater Center.
